"Books For Me is a non-profit society and a registered charity based in Vancouver. For many families, buying children's books just isn't possible. Books For Me provides children of these families an opportunity to build their own libraries for free. Our program comes to life as children choose their own book to take home and keep.
We collect gently used children books from many different organizations and then sort them and distribute them around the lower mainland.
Our locations include Vancouver schools and neighbourhood organizations. (e.g. Seymour Elementary, Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House).
Processes vary slightly by location, but the core approach is the same: a wide selection of children’s books is attractively displayed, then children and their families, depending on the program, are welcomed by volunteers and have the chance to browse through the books and choose one to take home.
Our guidelines are simple.
- At schools, including StrongStart programs, each child may choose one free book per visit
- At neighbourhood organizations, daycares and community centres, each child and each caregiver may choose one free book per visit
The volunteer commitment is usually, one day per month either a morning or afternoon depending on the location. A criminal record check is required for each volunteer. More information about the program or locations can be found at http://www.booksformevancouver.org
